POP 38 - "Dazzling Maribor Nights"

Back in 1989, Duško Vujošević's team had hellish, and it turned out golden, seven days of March. After the defeat in the first game of the final of the Radivoj Korac Cup against Viva in Kantu (the rematch brought triumph and winning the trophy), the black and whites arrived directly in Maribor for the final tournament of the Yugoslav Cup. Two days later, they had a semi-final against Zagreb's Cibona. "Well, we'll only have an easier training session", encouraged his teammates Žarko Paspalj before the game, but few believed that his prediction would actually come true.

Partizan "ran over" the Zagreb squad with a difference of 24 points - 103:79! Everyone was great and everything worked like a Swiss watch. In the end, Partizan's forwards Parežanin and Mutavdžić also entered the list of scorers.

The final with Jugoplastika, played on March 19, was just a continuation of the black and white basketball rhapsody, Vujošević set up the game without a mistake and the main levers of the Split team were stopped. Jugoplastica's "joker", the great scorer Duško Ivanović, scored only five points, and he was superbly guarded by Ivo Nakić, who was also excellent in attack. Kukoc and Radja were powerless in front of Partizan's furious game. All the players who performed that evening on the floor of Maribor's "Tabor" hall contributed to the brilliant triumph of 87:74 and winning the second Yugoslav Cup (the team led by Kićanović and coach Ivković won the first one ten years earlier). Masterful Đorđević (played all 40 minutes with 11 points), Paspalj, Nakić (both 16 points) and Divac, who recorded 26 points and 14 rebounds, captain Savović, who played with an injured left hand, experienced Vujačić (5 -5 from the game), young Danilović, brought a new trophy to Partizan and deserved a big celebration.

Partizan won the Yugoslav Cup that evening with the following lineup: Đorđević 11, Danilović, Parežanin, Vujačić 10, Savović 6, Mutavdžić 2, Divac 26, Popović, Paspalj 16, Nakić 16. Coach: Duško Vujošević.
